Witraz
(Ofir x Makata)
Bred by Janów Podlaski, Poland. 20th Century
Foundation Sire, International Sire of Significance.
Measurements: 152-183-19.0
The name of Witraz is synonymous with the Polish
Arabian - he was a horse of superior quality who can can be found in
nearly every Arabian pedigree of Polish descent. One of the famous
four W´s born in 1938 at Janów Podlaski and sired by the legendary
Ofir, Witraz survived the atrocities of World War II amidst the
harshest conditions, including the bombing of Dresden by Allied
forces. Arriving on the night of February 13th, 1945, with the
westward evacuation of the Janów herd to Germany, the entire group
of 80 stallions were engulfed in the one of the fiercest campaigns
of the European theatre, an event that destroyed the city of
Dresden. Over half of the stallions were lost in the rampage, a fate
that certainly would have befallen Witraz if not for the courage of
his groom, Jan Ziniewicz. With Witraz in one hand and Wielki Szlem
in the other, Jan held fast to his precious charges throughout the
horrific ordeal, even when Witraz´s tail caught fire. Director
Krzysztalowicz arrived early the next morning to find his most
precious sires distraught, but unharmed, thanks to the incredible
courage of the groom who had risked his own life to save the
stallions.
Both Witraz and Wielki Szlem were repatriated to Poland in 1946,
where each would establish legendary legacies of unparalleled
importance to the breed. Witraz was sent to the newly established
State Stud at Albigówa (while Janów Podlaski was rebuilt) where he
was met by the masterful breeding genius of Roman Pankiewicz, a
combination which propelled each into the international limelight
and secured a place for each in the annals of breed history. At
Albigówa, Witraz became the personal riding horse of Director
Pankiewicz and was bred to the stud´s finest mares.
Described as a horse of ´remarkable beauty, with a wonderful head
accented by large, dark eyes, small, fine ears and a refined muzzle
with capacious nostrils´, Witraz was also well known for his good
size, substantial, athletic build and long, well-shaped neck. His
most famous get was the immortal *Bask - had he done nothing but
sire this legend, he would have secured his place in history. Yet,
Witraz was a remarkably prepotent stallion who sired several
outstanding sons and a host of superlative daughters who have
irrevocably changed the breed.

Negatiw
(Nazeem x Taraszcza)
RASB*377, PASB*2090
Bred by Tersk Stud, Russia. Export 1962 to Poland. Race winner in
Poland. Race record: 1/4 (2-0-0). Sire of many race winners. Died
1973.
Sire line: Ibrahim Dam line: Gazella
DB 1954 Russian National Champion Stallion
Credited as the stallion that returned the Ibrahim
sire to Poland, Negatiw remains highly regarded around the world as
the most internationally influential grandson of the immortal
Skowronek. Though bred in Russia, Negatiw was from predominantly
Polish bloodlines as his dam was a Janów Podlaski confiscate from
the Second World War. As a considerably successful sire at Tersk,
Negatiw was greatly desired by the Poles for many years. He was
finally obtained at age 17, standing in Poland for another 10 years
with outstanding results.
Having already sired international Sires of Significance *Salon and
*Nabor in the USSR, Negatiw left Poland with the immortal *Bandos
and a host of wonderfully typey, ultra-refined and extraordinarily
feminine broodmares.
Director Krzysztalowicz described Negatiw as ´extremely dry and
refined, with a small, chiseled head accented by beautifully large,
dark and luminous eyes and small ears. His legs were relatively
correct (though slightly sickle-hocked) and his back and topline
were strong and a bit long. As a stallion, he was strikingly refined
and distinguished - he represented a rare example of perfection.

Kuhailan-Haifi
(Kuhailan Kharas x Kuhaila Haifi)
In 1930 Prince Roman Sanguszko
organized an expedition to Arabia in order to add new blood to his
Stud. Four desertbred Arabian stallions were among the horses
brought back to Poland in 1931. One of those stallions was Kuhailan
Haifi. A blood bay with a bright star in his forehead, Kuhailan
Haifi was bred by Khalef el Aouad in Arabia, and foaled in
1924.
Prince Sanguszko's agent was Mr.
Zientarski and he told of the first time he saw Kuhailan Haifi.
"During a three day stay at Abu Draatha I noticed some bay
Kuhailat fillies, very equal in type and beautiful indeed. They were
sired by a bay stallion, belonging to the Ruala Bedouins in the
neighborhood of Jauf...finally they lead in the bay Kuhailan Haifi.
It is just the horse I am seeking. Not large, dry, on splendid legs,
no trace of cow-hocks. A long neck, a noble head not very small,
with distended thin, movable nostrils, a splendid high-carried
tail...late in the night the stallion was bought and delivery
arranged."
Kuhailan Haifi was the best
stallion obtained by Prince Sanguszko. Purchased at Jauf, he was
truly in the desert, not in outlying regions. Kuhailan Haifi lived
but two years after arriving in Poland. He died after siring only 14
foals, the last born in 1935, and only one that year. Of these
foals, only five were colts.

Comet
(Abu Afas x Carmen)
Comet, a horse highly valued in Poland and noted
for great trotting action. It was fortunate that his quality was
recognized early as he died in 1964 at age 11, leaving behind only
86 foals (a number which includes the in utero exports to various
countries). Eleven of his get imported to the US or Canada have
captured 25 National honors, most in the Park division, and include
*Meczet who has National Championships in Formal Driving, Formal
Combination, Park and Costume. Some of Comet's daughters include
Warmia (dam of US National Champion Mare *Wizja), Engracia (dam of
European Champion Engano), Eunice (dam of Polish National Champion
Stallion *Eukaliptus and the sires Euben and *Eunizar) and Arba (dam
of European Champion Stallion Arbor and Arra who not only won the
Triple Crown of Derby, Oaks and Criterium but was Polish National
Champion Mare and European National Champion Mare). Comet's son
Grojec was a popular in England while Pohaniec has widespread
influence in Sweden. Comet is considered the most important post war
stallion in Poland. Bred by Nowy Dwor stud, his daughters left an
indelible mark in Polish breeding that remains today. Of his sons,
the sire line was very successfully re-introduced through the lease
of his grand son *Probat from Sweden.

Race Record: 4/19 (13-5-1) 2XAP+62X Criterium
Winner, 2X Criterium Winner; Sire of 3 Oaks, 5 Derby, & 3
Criterium Winners. A superior racehorse and the unparalleled sire of
Polish race champions, CZORT was utilized as chief sire in Poland
for 14 seasons with tremendous success. The official progenitor of
the Kuhailan Haifi sire line in Poland, CZORTs success as a sire was
largely responsible for the eventual sale of his contemporary BASK
to North America. Considered the best son of his invaluable sire,
CZORT was most consistent in transmitting his excellent
conformation, length of neck, dry, resilient constitution and
superlative athleticism, especially his prowess on the racecourse.
Though not considered the ideal Arabian in terms of type, CZORT is
remembered as a sire of immense value to the breed for his gifts of
outstanding construction, courage and performance capabilities. He
was the first horse of the post-war period to be enshrined in Janow
Podlaskis Park of Honor, a fitting tribute for his 12 years of
service to the Stud and lasting contribution to the breed.
